As someone who has dyslexia and has dealt with its symptoms on a daily basis for over 20 yrs. I can tell you it is a very misunderstood learning disability.

I will be sharing five of the most common misconceptions I’ve heard about dyslexia and what the truth really is.

Common misconception #1: Dyslexia is rare and only affects a few people.

Actually, dyslexia is more common than you think. According to the yale center of Dyslexia and Creativity, Dyslexia affects 20% of the population. That means every 1 in 5 students! Now let’s think about your average classroom. The average classroom size is 20 -25 students. This means 4 to 5 of those students possibly have a form of dyslexia. So the truth is that dyslexia is a very common learning disability. In fact, Dyslexia is the most common neuro-cognitive disorder.

Now for that disclaimer! I must say that I am not a professional therapist. I do not have the credentials to formally diagnose anyone with a learning disability. The information I will share with you is drawn from my own personal experience with dyslexia, university training, and the intensive research I have done trying to understand this learning disability.
