How to Teach Multiplication to Students with Learning Disabilities

Multiplication is a very common struggle for students with learning disabilities, but they are not impossible to teach. Let me show you how!

When I was a child, I often forgot or confused my multiplication facts. As a student with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADH, they didn’t quite click.

My mom had to be a little crazy and a lot silly to teach me in a way I understood. I’ll share that story a little later.

Why Do Students with Learning Disabilities Struggle Learning Multiplication Facts?

The answer is both simple and complex. Let’s talk through the simple answer.

First, what is multiplication? As an adult, we have been doing it so long it is easy to forget what it actually is! Multiplication is simply the addition of different groups. For example, 2 x 2 is really two groups of two items added together. Multiplication is fast addition.
